Hello parents and students,

Good evening parents and students,
I apologize for the Blog not being updated regularly this past week, it has definitely been a hectic week for us at school. Can you believe that there is only one more week of school!!! The year has flown by!

Here is an update from the week.

UOI-Coding:
Students are now finishing up their projects. Over the course of this week, we have had peer feedback and three different UnFocus Groups (our own class, Ms.Khan's class, Ms.Hocevar's class, and our Reading Buddies). I have definitely seen the projects get refined over the course of the week. The projects are due Monday! This weekend, the students need to fix any 'glitches' or coding errors and add to their projects based on the feedback.

Math:
In math, we have been working on Fractions and Decimals. This weekend, the students are working on adding and subtracting Fractions. Here is a video on adding fractions and here is a video on subtracting fractions.

Language:
Although, the required written components for grade 5 are finished, we taking this time to review and enforce common mistakes that the students make. This week we looked at using commas and fixing run on sentences!

As we count down the final days of the school year, there are a few more announcements to make. Next Tuesday will be the last day to wear school uniforms, as Wednesday will be our House Colour Spirit Day, where we will play one final house game and see which house is awarded The House Cup…GO Theta GO!!! Wednesday is also the Year-End Play Day. Friday is our Promotion/Graduation ceremony. We are asking that students wear something nice, as they will be receiving their certificates.
 Math:
Today we looked at a concept we already have a lot of practice in: Multiplying and Dividing Decimals (with tenths and hundredths). Students were given 4 worksheets, but most of them include a game. If students struggle, they are reminded to go back in their notes and look at the lessons from our Decimals unit!

In Language we looked at run on sentences. There is a Powerpoint (as well as copies of the worksheets) on the google classroom. Here is a fun video to help them understand what a run on sentence is and how to fix them!

Tomorrow students will have a chance for last edits and then they will showcase their games to their reading buddies and other classes!

The end of the year is fast approaching and there is still lots to learn and lots of fun to be had.

Today we looked at Comparing and Ordering fractions. We first looked at how to compare with number lines. Here is a video that we watched in class. This video is also very helpful for students.
We also looked at how to first take our fractions and find a common denominator so that comparing becomes much easier. Here is a picture to help students remember how to find fractions with equivalent denominators.

Language:
Students completed their OWA in class time today.
We will no longer we completing weekly spelling tests, I am sure the students will happy to hear that!
With the rest of our Language time, we will be looking at proper grammar since I have noticed a large gap in the students writing when it comes to proper grammar and punctuation. We will also be looking at how to properly edit work!

UOI: Coding
Students have begun their final summative projects! It is great to see how excited they are, I cannot wait to see the projects come to light. Each day students will receive feedback from the teacher and their peers. Though this is an individual project, I am looking to see students help each other and collaborate.

Good evening parents and students!
Today was a long and very active day! Students did an amazing job participating in every event and they really put in all their effort. Top placing students will be announced early next week. Below are a few pictures from the day.

We were able to complete a math lesson in the morning about Improper fractions and Mixed number fractions (and how to switch between them). Many students did very well with this lesson, however, is they need extra help at home here are two videos that really describe the steps in detail:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ggYdPef3Nuk
There are three worksheets for homework, one sheet has a game on it. The instructions were explained in class and they are expected to play with a family member over the weekend.

We also introduced our last Coding summative: Hackathon. This is going to be a very interactive and creative project. For homework students are to complete the first page (Project Pitch) and come up with brainstormed ideas of what project they might like to make.

Good evening parents and students!

Tomorrow is TRACK and FIELD Day!! There is also a bake sale and freezies will be on sale for $1!!
Students are to come to school in their gym uniform, bring a hat, water bottle and sunscreen!

I would like to first say a huge congratulations to both Lucas and Saanvi who came second in the Spelling Competitions. It was great to see their class peers cheer them on and wish them the best of luck.

Secondly, I want to say how proud I am of the students for waiting and watching the entire spelling bee. It showed a lot of integrity and principle! I know that it mean a late lunch for students, and that was not predicted, but it was great to see the grade 5 classes support all the Spelling Bee contestants.

Since the spelling bee went so long and the students were well behaved, I decided to have some fun in the sun! We had a long recess and they practiced their triple jump for tomorrow's track and field

We were also able to cover some Language in the morning. We looked at examples students had written with the last two days, peer assessed them and as a class discussed these assessments. It was great to see that students are really using their imaginations! The main theme of improvement that I saw was for students to add more detail about setting and character, as well as making sure they follow proper plot structure. Below is a photo students can look at and review for plot structure!

Good evening parents and students!

Today was our Dress Rehearsal for SJA students of Arts Night. Tomorrow we will be at the City Church all day as our last rehearsals are upon us! Tomorrow Night is the final performance for all parents and families to attend! We ask that students arrive at 6:15. The show start at 7pm.
Students must come dressed in their formal outfits!

Math:
The students have worked super hard today! We started the day with going over the key things needed on our math test and then the students wrote the test. After the students finished the test, they continued with their UOI Coding tutorials.

Language:
In language, we also reviewed plot and our stories. We also looked at the success criteria for our OWA which will be on Monday. Students created a note listing the criteria, and I made an anchor chart for in class.
Tonight, the students use their organizers to write a story. The narrative stories are due tomorrow.

Remember to:

  • add descriptions (using senses)
  • add metaphors and similes
  •  make sure that the plot builds to the climax
  • make sure that "problem" gets solved at the end
  • SHOW NOT TELL your story
