Class Schedule

Thursday 29 March 2018

29/03/2018

Good evening parents and students!

Report cards went home today!
If you have not yet picked a time for student-led conferences for Thursday April 5th, please make sure you do so!

Since Easter is this weekend I had a small Easter egg hunt in class! The students were very good at finding the eggs, but there were a few tricky ones that were hard to find!

The silent dance also look amazing today! It was great to see students being inclusive and having a bunch of fun!

In class:

Math:
Today we looked at congruent figures (two figures that are the same shape and size). Students had to also look more closely at the angles and side lengths of figures to tell if they were truly congruent. The stretch your thinking for these questions are really great brain teasers and I am excited to see how they do with them!

UOI: Government
Students worked in their groups to begin creating arguments and evidence to support their form of government. Some students are finding it hard to get supportive evidence, they are realizing that a lot of articles show bias for one type of government over others.
Students will continue this research Tuesday and we will have debates on Wednesday next week!

Language:
We looked at the next story we will be doing for our Literacy Circle: Shannen and the Dream for a School. I wanted to see what students already knew about Residential School and Aboriginal/Frist Nations peoples. I was really impressed to see how much they already knew as we did a mind map on the board.

We then read the prologue together and made some predictions. The books and literacy circle novel will be sent home as homework started Tuesday April 9th.

28/03/2018

Good evening parents and students!

Tomorrow we are having an Autism Awareness day. Please have students dress in blue to show awareness. Several students in our class have also brought in forms and money to attend the Silent Dance. It sounds like it will be an amazing, fun time! Students can still bring in forms and money tomorrow morning if they want to attend.

Here are some events coming up soon:

Thursday March 29- Austim Awareness day- wear blue
Friday March 30-April 2- Easter weekend, no school Friday and Monday
Tuesday April 3- Easter Spirit Day
Wednesday April 4- Summer Uniform begins
Thursday April 5- Student Led Conferences

Math:
In class today we continued looking at transformations but began to use a combination of different transformations.  I have also created an anchor chart in class to help students remember the different transformations that we are using. This unit is a tricky one for many students as it requires a lot of visualization. For students struggling at home, I suggest that you take a spare piece of paper and cut out the same shape, so that they have a manipulative to help them see the different transformations,  then see what the image looks after a transformation occurs.

UOI: Government
Today had a mock debate! I had the class split in half and argue for or against homework. Students did well working with their group and by the end of the lesson I was seeing some amazing critical thinking being done. Tomorrow students will researching about the type of government I have assigned them in class today. In small groups they will then start to create arguments with evidence to suggest why their type of government is best for a country.
Later next week we will have two debates in class to see their knowledge!

 Busy discussing their counter agruments!

Today we also had reading buddies!!!

27/03/2018

Good evening parents and students.
Tomorrow is Casual day!

Students were sent home with information about Pick A Time for Student-Led Conferences which take place Thursday April 5th. The scheduler will go live at 9:00am Wednesday March 28 (tomorrow).

Here are some events coming up soon:
Wednesday March 28- Casual Day
Thursday March 29- Austim Awareness day- wear blue
Friday March 30-April 2- Easter weekend, no school Friday and Monday
Tuesday April 3- Easter Spirit Day
Wednesday April 4- Summer Uniform begins
Thursday April 5- Student Led Conferences

Today in class:

Math:
Today in math we went over transformations (reflection, rotation, translation).
This video helps explain about the three types of transformations.
Students at first struggled to visualize and complete the transformations, but by picking a vertex and using that as a focus, students could more easily find out where they should start drawing their new translated image.
Another thing we went over in class was that the shape and size of the figure does not change when there is a transformation.

UOI:Government
In class today,we looked at three different forms of government: Democracy, Oligarchy, Autocracy. We watched a video that briefly described a little bit about how each government is created and how they make decisions. As we watched the students filled out a graphic organizer Students also then tried to think of countries that have the different forms of governments we discussed.

26/03/2018

Welcome back parents and students!
Today was a great first day back. It was lovely to see students and hear about their various March Breaks. I was even more impressed that they completed all their homework and were eager to learn!

Here are some events coming up soon:
Wednesday March 28- Casual Day
Thursday March 29- Austim Awareness day- wear blue
Friday March 30-April 2- Easter weekend, no school Friday and Monday
Tuesday April 3- Easter Spirit Day
Wednesday April 4- Summer Uniform begins
Thursday April 5- Student Led Conferences

Today in class:

Math:
Today we began our new unit into Transformational Geometry! Students first reviewed the lesson they completed over the break about Grid systems. When looked into the Grade 5 curriculum about  Coordinate systems. It was a breeze for the students as they were familiar with coordinate systems since we did graphing before the break!

Language:
Today students were to create a small story about their March Break. The twist was that they needed to write it as if someone else was telling their story! They then drew a picture to match what they had written about. If this was not completed in class or recess it was sent home to finish.

UOI:Government
First we took a look at the articles that everyone brought in from over the break. The majority of the articles had to do with the United States but they were all different! Students paired up and talking about their article in depth and looked for similarities and difference between the politics they read about. The conversations that students were having really impressed me and showed me that they really want to learn more about our government and about other types of government within countries. We also created a dictionary of terms that students saw within their articles that needed further explanation.
